In the Studio with Karen Stiehl Osborn

Karen Stiehl Osborn is an award-winning mixed media artist and someone who has been working hard for Fiberart For A Cause since the very beginning. In fact, Karen was the first artist to join me in this grand venture in 2005 when we both decided to make and sell a few fabric postcards.  This year Karen is doing double duty by donating photographs and BONUSES for Foto/Fiber 2012.

1.  How do you find/make time to be in your studio?
I head into my studio in the early morning hours. The house is quiet, and I love this time in my studio!

2.  Describe your studio in five words.

Surrounded by what I love!

3.  If you could pick only one thing from your studio to represent your art practice, what would it be?
Paint

4. What is the best/worst space you have ever had as a studio?
I like my current space, because I love having a studio in my home. It is so easy to pop in there and get work done whenever I feel like.

Karen will be offering three BONUSES for Foto/Fiber 2012.
Each will include painted cloth & paper, a handmade mini notebook,
a small artwork and much, much more! She’s hoping the envelopes will close.

5.  What would make a “dream studio” for you?
Lots of space and lots of natural light, surrounded by a gorgeous natural view out the windows.

6.  What would you advise someone setting up a studio for the first time?
Plan your layout based on how you actually work.

***Join us on February 15 and 16 for Foto/Fiber 2012.  100% of donations will be made directly to the American Cancer Society through Fiberart For A Cause.  We have already donated more than $215,000 to the ACS.

New Photographer and Gorgeous Photos Added to Foto/Fiber 2012

After the Rain
Karen Stiehl Osborn

Karen Stiehl Osborn has generously donated six photos (including the one above) to Foto/Fiber 2012.  They will be available in a very limited edition of three each on February 15 and 16 as part of our new fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.

Karen has been a strong supporter of Fiberart For A Cause since its inception in 2005 in memory of her Dad, lost too early to cancer.  Karen and I used to paint together once a month when I lived in Nebraska and we also spent some hilarious weekends conducting very weird fiber art experiments (burning! discharging!) at the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts.

Karen and I are now part of a private group, 5 Photos, whose members have committed to taking at least five photos a day and posting the best five each week.  We have been doing this for over a year, so photography seemed a natural addition to our fiber fundraiser.

Karen shares her photography daily on her A Photographic Life blog.  She also volunteers as a photographer with   the Hand, Hearts, and Paws all-animal rescue in Omaha, NE.  Her photos make such a difference in showing the lovability of these neglected and often abused animals.  I am not a dog person, but even I want to adopt one after seeing her photos.

After seeing hundreds photos of Karen’s over the past year, I can tell you that she has chosen the best of the best for Foto/Fiber 2012.  We are focusing on the beautiful, the inspiring, and the positive for this fundraiser and Karen’s photos will continue to inspire you long after they arrive in your mailbox.

More of Karen’s photos for Foto/Fiber 2012 will be featured on this blog and on the Foto/Fiber 2012 webpages prior to February 15 and 16 with a review of all 90 photos posted on or before February 14.

P.S.  We haven’t forgotten the FIBER!  Coming in the new year will be previews of the BONUSES (including three from Karen) from our amazing team of 36 artists as well as the fiber art to be given away in drawings for the ninety (yes, that’s it, just 90) Foto/Fiber 2012 patrons.

More artwork to help all-breed animal rescue with vet bills

Karen Stiehl Osborn is selling small artworks on her blog to benefit Hands, Hearts & Paws, an all-breed animal rescue in Omaha, NE.  She has just posted a mini-collection including my Black Stone:

This artwork would make a nice companion piece to mine:

Karen works hard to benefit this rescue because:

Often they accept the dogs that no other rescue will take, usually because of expensive medical needs. Recently they had a surgical bill of $1000 for a dog that had a prong collar embedded in his neck and a chunk of wood puncturing his trachea. Now they have a dog that has tested positive for heartworms and a dog that needs surgery for a luxating patella. Both of those dogs’ treatments will run hundreds of dollars each. I volunteer with this rescue, because I truly believe that they put the needs of the dogs ahead of all politics and financial concerns.

I am asking for your help to raise funds for these medical bills. I will be selling Artist Trading Cards for $20 each, until I run out of cards to sell. The rescue has several events scheduled for the coming months, and I will be selling the artwork at these events, plus selling them online through my blog and Facebook.

If you are an artist, please consider donating an ATC to the cause. If you are a patron, please consider purchasing a small artwork to support the rescue and enhance your own art collection.

Small artwork to help rescued animals

milkweed 3 by Virginia A. Spiegel
Sold (But check Karen’s blog for more upcoming choices)

My friend, Karen Stiehl Osborn, is raising funds to help with the uber-expensive vet bills of an animal rescue.  I happily made and donated eight special ATCs (small artworks the size of baseball trading cards).  milkweed 3 is now up on Karen’s blog (just scroll down an entry or two).  You can expect to see more artwork available on her blog in the near future.

More information from Karen if you would like to help by buying or donating artwork:

I love milkweed as a subject for artwork because of its architectural shape in leaves, blooms, pods, and seeds.  milkweed 3 is watercolor paper mounted to cardstock and includes watercolor, ink, acrylic paint, and a print from a hand-cut lino block.

Karen Stiehl Osborn – Living a Life with Meaning

Karen Stiehl Osborn is an artist enamored of the colors and textures of Nature.  She shares her interpretation of Nature’s beauty in collage, watercolor paintings, fiber artwork, and photographs.

But she is not a studio-bound artist.  She is active with dog rescue organizations, including the Wag N Train Terrier Rescue, volunteering to shoot photos of rescued dogs so that each animal has the best chance of achieving a forever home.

Karen has also been an integral part of the Fiberart For A Cause fundraising efforts from the very beginning.  In fact, she was the first person who asked, “Could I make a postcard also?” That was over $205,000 donated to the American Cancer Society and five years ago.

Karen’s website showcases her prolific production of artwork and her blog shares her love of rescue dogs, her garden, the making of art, and more.

For this year’s big fundraiser to fight cancer on February 16, Karen is donating collages as well as working hard behind the scenes to prep all 100 collage jpegs and the event pages. Karen took a moment from her busy schedule to participate in a little Q&A:

1.  Why are you participating in the ONE fundraiser for the American Cancer Society?
Dad died in 2001 from leukemia at a fairly young age. His death changed my life in many ways. I learned that life can be shorter than I realized and that it is important to me to live a life with meaning. I quit my career as an accountant and started working in my studio all day. I also started donating to causes that are important to me, including the American Cancer Society. I have been a part of FFAC since the beginning, and it means a lot to me to continue to support Virginia’s fundraising efforts, as a tribute to Dad and as a way to add meaning to my life.

2.  Tell us about your collages for ONE.
These collages are a new series titled “ME Words”. I started by making a list of words that are important to me as an artist. I included some words that have a deeper meaning, and some that are a little more practical, like “collage”. I scanned the dictionary page with the word on it, circled it in black, and glued it down as the first layer of the collage. Then I added layers of hand painted Chinese papers, more layers of paint, more layers of papers — until I was happy with the color combinations and layout of each collage. Coincidentally, these are my favorite colors — earth tones and jewel tones.

3.  What are you working on in the studio now?
Photography, watercolor, and collage. I have a series of photographs that I took on a recent art retreat, and I am working with these photos and some watercolor paintings that I did from the photos. I am hoping to incorporate the photos, the watercolor paintings, and painted papers and cloth into a new series about the natural beauty of that special place.

4.  What has been the biggest surprise of your art career so far?
That others appreciate my art (and even buy it!). I have always created for myself, so it is very gratifying when people email me to let me know that they love different pieces that I have created. Even when I switch gears in the studio, my followers continue on with me. It is a fabulous life!

5.  Where do you find inspiration?
Everywhere! I am inspired by nature, but I take that inspiration and create abstractly from it. I am rarely without my camera, so I take tons of photos of nature and the world around me. My art almost always evolves from something I have seen or something I have experienced. It is very personal, although the viewer may not always realize that. Most of the time, it is very subtle, and I like that because it allows the viewer to bring their own experiences to the piece.

6.  Do you collect art?  If so, how do you know a piece is right for your collection?
I do collect art from other artists. It gives me a good feeling to support other artists, and I enjoy living in a home where art surrounds me. I buy art that speaks to me. It is an immediate feeling that I get when I see the piece, and if it doesn’t go away, I know it is an artwork that is right for me. I try to collect art that is outside of the mediums that I use, but that is not a definite rule as I own many collages from other artists.

7.  What would you do with a year free to do what you wanted with no responsibilities or financial concerns?
This is an easy one! I would pack up my camera and art supplies, and I would travel. I would photograph and paint all day every day until the year was over. And then I would wish for another year just like that one!
