Tent Journal to “Real” Journal

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

I liked working on the tent journal so much that I decided to start a journal with the same format. I have loved using writing as a design element ever since I took a semester-long course in typography. (Artwork with writing include these series: Boundary Waters, July, Portage, Journey, and all of the Bees.)

I tried many paper and writing tool combinations:

This was a fine-point UniBall pen on Fabriano paper. Not “juicy” enough.

I finally settled on this plain white paper journal and Sharpie markers.

A mark of a good journal is one in which you look forward to writing in it. I don’t know if I want 365 pages of this, but this small journal is do-able and still fun.

Artist Pam Rubert recently posted about her journal and the work of several other artists. Take a look on her blog.

Inspiration and The Garbage Day Project

Patina

These are birdhouse gourds. And, yes, I really do make birdhouses from them, although it is a pain to do and they don’t last very long. But each gourd is beautiful in its own way and the mold they form as they dry makes a lovely patina on the surface. These are still quite green. Patience is needed

Of course, there is a new post on The Garbage Day Project today with a link to a fun recycling and art blog.

I wanted to mention, before it is too late, artist Claudine Intner’s online exhibit and fundraiser, Art Now for Autism.

Visit the website today as artwork from 26 artists, including fiber artists Pamela Allen, Christi Beckman, Karen Loprete, Sylvia Weir, and Beth Wheeler, will be available only through October 31. All money raised will go to Autism Speaks and Cure Autism Now.

The Potter and The Muse

The Potter and The Muse
by Lotte Streisinger was recommended to me by Martha Sielman (her niece and Executive Director of Studio Art Quilt Associates). Thank you, Martha.

This lovely book is full of wisdom from a lifetime of being an artist and is enlivened by linocut illustrations. It is a meditation on the creative process written in a down-to-earth, humorous, and thoughtful style. Who among us hasn’t dealt with “Getting Started Again,” “Dealing With Rejection” and “Solitude versus Loneliness?” I would even recommend it for non-artists because of the message that a life lived with passion, whether for art or not, is the life well-lived.

The book is available from the SAQA bookstore under Guest Book Titles.
