Sharing the “how” and “why” of an artwork

Boundary Waters 14

This artwork arrived safely at Peggy Schroder’s home and she sent me this note:
You did mention what materials you used to create it, but I would especially enjoy hearing “how” and “why” you made it, if you would be willing to share that information. I love stories behind the quilts!

She has given me permission to quote my reply here. I wrote it quite spontaneously, but I feel it captures “the story behind the story” better than the necessarily brief artist statement I wrote for the Boundary Waters series:

As you know, your artwork is part of the Boundary Water series and I painted all the fabric (100 yards of 60″ wide cotton) in less than two weeks while in Texas on my residency. The palette was brown, blue, yellow/gold and peach.

I had a huge notebook full of photos, drawings, and writings about the Boundary Waters with me, but when I started this piece I was thinking of two things: Bark and roots. I don’t know if you remember, but in one of my e-newsletters I talked about the cedar trees in the Boundary Waters.

They are very twisted and fissured. So the left side of the piece is trees and bark, but, of course, very abstract.

Also because most of the Boundary Waters is granite, tree roots tend to be very visible. It is as though you can see their lifelines hanging on to the rocks. I always feel the power of trees while I am in the Boundary Waters and I wanted to give that feeling also.

That is a little bit about your piece. I would have to say that when I am working, I am going for more of a feeling or a gestalt than anything specific. Your piece makes me think of power, of layers, of the age-old strength and wisdom of trees.

July 29 is now available on my website.

I have re-arranged the many July collages so the available collages are more clearly marked and at the top of the page.

In related news, Tracy Borders acquired this collage for her collection. Thank you, Tracy!

Unconscious Beauty

Isn’t it true that when you aren’t TRYING, beautiful results just appear? This is a group of fabrics I ironed and layered without a thought in my head.

I asked Karen Stiehl Osborn what I could send her a teeny-tiny thank-you for proofreading Art, Nature, Creativity, Life. She said she would be happy with scraps of my hand-painted fabric that she could use for collage. She has received the package, so I can share this photo without spoiling the surprise. Thank you, Karen!

An ironing board with pink legs–who could resist that? Visit The Garbage Day Project for today’s photos and news about garbage, art and recycling.

Today’s bonus photo is a closeup of fountain grass. I bought a flat of grasses at a plant sale and thought they were miscanthus sinensis (tall), but they turned out to be these lovely, short grasses. I have never really appreciated them until today with the delicate seed heads swaying in the fog and mist.

“Art, Nature, Creativity, Life” e-book

After much consultation, the minimum donation for the “Art, Nature, Creativity, Life” e-book has been set at $25. You will notice the obvious phrasing of “minimum” donation. All of the money will go directly to the American Cancer Society for education and research, so any donation above the minimum will be cause for celebration. If you missed it the first time, here is more information about the e-book.

As many of you know, Karey Bresenhan (Director of International Quilt Festival) is Fiberart For A Cause’s honorary chairperson. She taught me, and I’m sure many other lucky individuals, to dream BIG. So, with some trepidation, I am announcing that my goal for the e-book is to raise $30,000 for the ACS. It may take more than a year, but I know this goal CAN be achieved with your help and support.

So stay tuned for more details on or before October 1.
