Jane Davila is a thriving quilt artist who also manages to find time to be an author, editor, and teacher. Jane is the coauthor, with Elin Waterston, of Art Quilt Workbook and Art Quilts at Play plus Jane Davila’s Surface Design Essentials, all for C&T Publishing. All of these works plus two of her DVDs can be seen here. Jane’s artwork is known for its color, its texture, and its use of many media. Through her work as an editor for Quilting Arts, she has provided exposure for many artists’ artwork (including my own) to a greater audience.

2. Describe your source of inspiration for your artwork.
The idea of making a piece related to a month of the year (April) got me thinking about traditions from my childhood, in particular Easter dresses and new pretty outfits for Spring. I abstracted a simple dress shape to represent that feeling of delight in new clothes and fresh beginnings.
3. If you could switch to another medium as a career, what would it be? Why?
I’m not sure I’d want to switch, but I might be tempted to add another medium! If the real estate market ever recovers, I would love to buy old houses, fix them up and flip them. There is something so satisfying about seeing the promise in the good bones of a building and getting your hands dirty to bring that promise to life.
4. Do you support any other good causes besides Fiberart For A Cause?
I’m pleased to be taking part in the Kick Off Your Heels fundraiser for women’s heart health this year. I’ve been working on a pair of crazy mixed-media high heeled shoes and am finding it a good stretch to translate my voice to such a 3D form.
5. What’s coming up for you in the near and far future?
In addition to being the editor of the digital emagazines for Quilting Arts (In Stitches & Surface Explorations), I am now the editor of the annual print magazine Quilting Arts Gifts. I’ll also be traveling back to Australia this year to teach in Sydney, and I’m working on some new products to release this year through my online store, Flourish!
