Portage Series

Each year, my sister and I load up her 17’ Kevlar canoe, our packs and paddles and take a journey of discovery within the Boundary Water Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW). The BWCAW, following along the Canadian border of northeastern Minnesota, is a million acres of forest with 1000 lakes, 160 miles of portage trails connecting these lakes and 1200 miles of canoe routes.

Weeks after I return from the BWCAW, my sleeping hours are spent journeying by canoe. I hear the splash of water on my paddle, the call of the loon and the absolute stillness of the lake, the forest and my heart.
