Each year my sister and I load up her canoe and take a trip in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in northern Minnesotoa. Wilderness is the key word here; there are no signposts, no clearly marked portages from one lake to another, and very few other travelers. We love the solitude and the challenge of paddling, navigating and portaging.

Although every ounce counts in our packs, we always make room for journals. My journal takes the form of cardstock cut to a small book size, scored for later binding and stored in a waterproof bag with a pen. Every day when our labor is done, we sit, reflect, sketch, photograph, muse and write poetry. This year I decided to incorporate my journal pages into a multi-media art book.
