Discharged and Beaded Velvet Scarf

11" wide x 72" long
Collection of Carol L. Myers
In Memory of Her Father, W.K. Upton

I am having a love affair with velvet! The way the light dances on the subtle designs adds a depth that is hard to describe and has held my interest in velvet for the past five years. This silk/rayon velvet scarf is approximately 11 x 72 in size and has been discharged (color has been lifted from the fabric) in several degrees in a block design that has at its center a single shiny bead. The scarf is lined with a sheer black polyester that allows the wearer to see the reverse of the discharge design. Light and fluid, this scarf is elegant and fun to wear.

I have always been drawn to fiber. This everyday substance is such an important part of our lives. We describe ourselves by the choices of what we wear. I enjoy having my work be part of those choices. I have been involved with surface design for almost 30 years, working in all facets of it. Most recently, my work has been with velvet. The discharge process lifts color from the velvet, giving it an added dimension. I love seeing the unexpected results that happen when you cannot have complete control over a substance or process. Color and texture take on a whole new meaning in this evolvement.

My goal is to give people added variety in decorating themselves. I would love to be known as a Designer of Beautiful Creations! I have shown and sold my work all over the Pacific Northwest in galleries and fine clothing stores. Currently my work is shown at Panache in Lakeside, Montana and Changes in Portland, Oregon.
