This past winter, I was lucky enough to briefly escape the harsh New England winter by visiting the western Caribbean. Observing the patterning of waves, the subtle flow of the currents, and the brilliant, coppery reflections of the sun, I was inspired to capture such natural grace.
Construction: I began by fusing a piece of painted WonderUnder to transfer-dyed panne velvet, then embellished with novelty yarns, threads, and beads. Lastly, I free-motion stitched with variegated threads.
Patricia (Pokey) Bolton is Editor-in-Chief of Quilting Arts and Cloth Paper Scissors magazines.
She was introduced to embellished quilting and the related needle arts six years agowhen she took some Christmas money and bought her first sewing machine. Ever since she took her first stitch (a fly) and embroidered her first motif (a spider), she has been entangled in this hobby and doesn't envision herself free. Embellished quilting has, quite literally, taken over her lifeso much so that she left her doctoral program and full-time job as a special education teacher five years ago to found Quilting Arts Magazine. She lives in Stow, Massachusetts with her husband, three dogs, and two cats.
