Honestly, if I tried to find a photo like this it would never happen. My theory of a garbage quantity/temperature correlation holds true today. 32 degrees and minimal garbage.

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008There is just always something sad about a blanket in the garbage. Even if it really is garbage, the pathos of it all!
Three things happen on the first weekend when the temps reach above 75 degrees. Everyone mows their lawn, whether it needs it or not; cleans their garage; and throws out a boat load of stuff. I’m sure there is a garbologist who has a chart with the correlation of the weather and tons dumped in the landfill.
Amazing Things A Garbage Truck Can Crush
Yes, an air compressor. Does this strike anyone else as maybe not the safest thing to squish in a garbage truck? I actually watched to see this go in the hopper. No, common sense prevails and the air compressor remains at the curb.
Art from Garbage
OK, I withstand the actually useful stuff I could cart home (chairs, desks, etc.), and instead drag home these four very heavy metal pipe thingies. There are pipes inside the pipes. I loved the color, but wish they were taller. I’m thinking some sort of environmental sculpture winding through the scrubby part of my backyard. And, hey, if that doesn’t work out, my Dad will be thrilled. He will make something useful out of them.
The Garbage Day Project today feels a lot like the end of winter in the garden. You wait and wait for something good to come along, and then one day hundreds of daffodils open at once. An embarrassment of garbage.

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008Who can resist shiny, shiny stuff? Seriously, I think this is another one of those items that may or may not be actually acceptable for our curbside recycling. Wax paper is definitely not. So many things that aren’t acceptable for curbside recycling are acceptable at the prairie reserve recycling center. You have to call to receive a list of acceptable items for curbside recycling from our garbage company – that’s crazy!
It’s time to check up on Winter Trellis, my very first garbage art project for The Garbage Day Project.

Winter Trellis (April 2008)
It’s not in too bad of shape considering it has been outside since November 7, 2007. To see what Winter Trellis looked like when it was new and to read about the making of Winter Trellis, please click here and scroll to the bottom of the page.
