Twisted

Today’s photo is of fence posts in a trash can – great texture with the twine and a plastic seat cover behind it.

I am hoping the Garbage Guys start on a Daylight Savings Time schedule next week or it will be “to the archives” for quite some time. I was out today before the sun was all the way up and the sun and the garbage truck arrived at about the same time. Lovely time of the day to be out though.

Glow

Sometimes there is small garbage treasures along the street. This little neon ball has been there for a month or more. I like how the green leaf points to it.

And last, but not least, another coffee maker bit the dust and joins It’s Like Love.

White Corners

This was a white comforter draped over two trash cans and, in case you couldn’t figure it out, there’s a nifty note telling you it’s trash.

I’ve been saving up chair photos. I REALLY wanted to take home this poor old chair:

Here’s a fun garbage art blog with an enviable name and interesting content:
Olympia Dumpster Divers was started in 2006 by Ruby Re-Usable to promote the appreciation of art from recycled, reused, discarded, unwanted, unloved, tossed and found, pre- and post- consumer waste materials.

Challenging perception and creating new ways to look at the world is what artists do. Recycled artists do this not only by their choice of subject matter but through their deliberate choice of unconventional materials, forcing the viewer to reconsider preconceived notions of what materials are appropriate for creating art . The most successful recycled artists elevate recycled art above mere novelty and whimsy, beyond egg cartons and cardboard tubes, past the goofiness of randomly gluing a bunch of junk together and calling it modern art; they are serious artists with a sense of humor, engaged in heroic acts of trashformation. Circle of Life

Today’s photo came, I hate to admit, from my garbage. What can I say? Styrofoam is hard to get dispose of in a responsible manner. I kept this for a long time thinking I would use it in painting fabric, but I’m cleaning out my painting area and out it went.
(Here is a piece I painted using a similar piece of styrofoam for one of the layers.)

UPDATE:
Major guilt trip avoided. The recycling truck came through first and took the styrofoam off the top of the garbage can. Who knew?

Mary W. from Nebraska sent me a link to this humorous article about the not-too-funny reality of planned obsolescence.

Amazing Things A Garbage Can Can Crush

I’m not so sure it’s amazing today as just unusual.

What could possibly have been wrapped in this much blue bubble wrap?

I love how they stuffed these tall metal pieces in the garage can. I have no idea what all the metal would reconsititue into, but I think the towers would have made good trellis.

It’s nice to have cool weather again. Our unseasonably warm weather must have led to some serious garage cleaning; I stocked up today on some great photos for the archives.

This is a tough call. It’s Garbage Day. It’s at the curb. It does have a sticker on it – $50. But it’s been out all night as it is covered in dew. Would you think this is going in the hopper?

My personal pet peeve.

To end on a happier note, the National Recycling Coalition has a goofy recyling calculator on its site.

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007

What a conundrum. I started The Garbage Day Project because of seeing all the stuff in the garbage that could have been recycled. And today I was despairing that there wasn’t any good garbage. Surprisingly, the recycling bins were fuller than the garbage cans.

It was a mystery until the lights of a school bus loomed out of the fog. Of course, the kids are back in school and many of their parents work in the schools. Luckily, the recyling bins were pretty interesting and this is one photo that I didn’t crop at all. It’s so October.

Today on my other blog, I have an Art From Garbage project.

Two previous Art From Garbage projects: It’s Like Love and Autumn Trellis. You will need to scroll down to the end of the webpage to see Autumn Trellis. It was part of the very first day of The Garbage Day Project.
