Today is supposed to be our last 90 degree day of the summer, so I was out early. A little too early as I had to pass by a big pile of carpeting for the Amazing Things A Garbage Truck Can Crush as the guy was bringing more out on a dolly. Well, you can probably imagine it. Once you have seen one depressing pile of carpet, you pretty much have seen them all.

An interesting link for today. All you ever wanted to know about composting. My take on composting is that you can do the hard way or the easy way. The easy way is set up a four foot wire ring (OK, two or three rings would be better), throw an equal amount of green (veggie and plant refuse) and brown (dried leaves or grass) organic material in, wait a year – Black Gold!

BJ Parady sent me the note and link below. OK, it’s satire, but I could see this as a recycling bin. Good scouting, BJ:

I’m sending this link to you not because of politics, but because of
your garbage project. Click on the slide show, and go to picture number 8. An excellent example of recycling and art.

And on to today’s photo:

It’s a “twofer.” Not just an ironing board with pink legs, but also a giant football full of garbage.

Well, here it is at last. The Garbage Day Project has its own blog and all entries will be at this address. Click here if you would like to see all The Garbage Day Project entries you missed since its inception in November 2006. An explanation of The Garbage Day Project is below and also under Welcome in the Categories column to the right.

It was a dark and stormy morning, but I hate to go to the archives unless there is lightning. And, of course, it was a bonanza day. Chairs are always interesting and the blue rack behind this chair may be featured on its own some day. I seriously thought about toting the rack home (print drying rack, anyone?), but decided to stick to my own rules. I can’t believe the Amazing Things A Garbage Truck Can Crush entry below. I thought it was a sliding door, but now that I look at it, I believe it’s a window. In any case, it was big.

Welcome to The Garbage Day Project

I live in rural America in a subdivision that provides me with interesting fodder every Tuesday. It’s Garbage Day and as far as the eye can see there is stuff, stuff, and more stuff waiting for the garbage truck to come and take it to the landfill. This can’t be good.

I thought at first that I should “rescue” something every Tuesday. I did so the first Tuesday, but the second Tuesday it dawned on me that my own urge to reduce was directly at odds with hauling more “stuff” home every Tuesday.

So I will be taking photos every Tuesday, garbage permitting, and posting them here. An artistic photo is generally my goal, but sometimes I have to go with humorous. I will also be posting photos of “Amazing Things A Garbage Truck Can Crush.”

Occasional posts will feature art made from garbage as well as tips and notes about recycling. I welcome comments and would be glad to link to other sites with a similar focus.

You can see all The Garbage Day Project posts from its inception on November 7, 2006 through August 7, 2007 on my website here.
